Former Government Minister and Labour TD, Pat Rabbitte has said the sale of Aer Lingus would be in the country's best interests as it would create jobs and help in the growth of tourism.
Mr Rabbitte had previously expressed concern on the matter however he said he had been convinced by IAG, that their takeover of the airline is in the national interest, following the appearance of it's CEO, Willie Walsh, before the Oireachtas Transport Committee.
Speaking on RTÉ's This Week programme Mr Rabbitte said that another offer like IAG's is unlikely to emerge again and if the government pass on this bid, he would be concerned for the airline's future.
Mr Rabbitte denied that the Government was concerned that both coalition parties could take a hit in electoral support if it sold Aer Lingus.
He said the Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe had an interdepartmental group to take evidence from all quarters, to ensure he has the best advice available to him.
Unions express support for Aer Lingus takeover bid
Speaking on the same programme, a trade union official representing workers at Aer Lingus said that staff at the airline are broadly supportive of IAG's proposed takeover bid.
Myles Worth, Secretary of the Aer Lingus Central Representative Council, said staff had been encouraged by recent reassurances given by Willie Walsh.
Earlier this month, the IAG chief executive told the Oireachtas Transport Committee that he was prepared to give a "cast-iron legal guarantee" on Aer Lingus' Heathrow slots if its takeover bid went ahead. He also said that while some jobs would be lost, more would be created, if IAG took over the airline.
Mr Worth said unions at Aer Lingus were due to meet management later this week, and were also hoping to secure a future meeting with Willie Walsh.
