The body of a woman found dead in rural Limerick has been removed from the scene and taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.

The woman, who was in her mid 60s, was discovered with a head injury at the rear of a neighbour's house in an area known as Ballygibba, located between Bruree and Kilmallock, at around 3pm yesterday.

She was found just 400 metres from her own home.

Gardaí are concerned about how the woman may have died.

They are treating the death as suspicious until the results of the post-mortem are available.

State Pathologist Marie Cassidy arrived at the area at around 11.30am and a preliminary examination of the scene was carried out.

It is understood the woman, who is from the local area, is survived by a number of grown-up children.

Gardaí have not released her name yet, as no formal identification has taken place.
