New poll boosts Fine Gael and Labour

A new opinion poll brings good news for the Coalition partners, Fine Gael and Labour.

The first Red C poll of 2015 for Paddy Power shows gains for both parties.

Compared to the last Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post in December, today's findings, when "don't knows" are excluded, show: Fine Gael 24% (+3); Labour 8% (+2); Fianna Fáil 18% (-1); and Sinn Fein 21% (-3).

Lucinda Creighton's planned new party got just 1%.

Independents/Others were 29% (-1), which includes 1% for the Green Party, who are down 1.

The fieldwork for today's poll among 1,000 voters nationwide was undertaken on Monday and Tuesday in the midst of the emergency department overcrowding crisis.

Government parties will be hoping the poll may also provide the first indication that the tax cuts in the Budget are kicking in for people who have received their January salary.

However, historically, January is also a month when Government parties fare slightly better in polls because of the Dáil break.

On party leader performance, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tánaiste Joan Burton have the highest ratings with 35% and 33% respectively.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin is on 31% and Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams is on 27%.

Support for the same-sex marriage referendum is running at 80% for and 20% against when the "don't knows" are excluded.
