Inquiry into action by fertility doctor

A Medical Council inquiry into a case involving a fertility doctor who carried out a procedure on a Galway woman has heard a decision to clip both of her fallopian tubes without consent was extraordinary.

Professor Anthony Smith, a Consultant Gynaecologist from Manchester, said that it was extraordinary that Doctor Declan Egan made the decision to clip Lorna McKeogh's fallopian tubes.

Dr Egan practises at University Hospital Galway and runs the private Galway Fertility Unit in Rahoon.

Prof Smith also expressed surprise at what he called the lack of detail in Dr Egan's operation notes regarding the size and condition of the fallopian tubes.

He added there was no description in the notes of the thought processes surrounding such a life-changing operation.

He said that he felt Dr Egan did not grasp the gravity of the situation and he found that surprising.

Ms McKeogh, from Mountbellew, Co Galway, claims that she was left infertile as a result of the bilateral tubal ligation performed on her at the Galway Fertility Unit.

Dr Egan faces an allegation of clipping both fallopian tubes in circumstances where this was not consistent with the consent form dated 2 June 2010.

Arising from this, he faces an allegation that he failed to meet the standards of competence that could be reasonably expected of a consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist.

Dr Egan claims his decision to clip both tubes was medically justified.
