GSOC Chairman Simon O'Brien resigns

The chairman of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, Simon O'Brien, has resigned.

Mr O'Brien will leave his position at the end of the month.

He is to take up a role as the chief executive of the Pensions Ombudsman Service for the UK in February.

In a statement, Mr O'Brien said: "I have been in Ireland for five years in two posts.

"This is a significant opportunity and I am looking forward to the new challenge.

"The new post will bring me back home to be with my wife and young family in London."

Mr O'Brien was appointed chairman of the commission on 12 December 2011.

Previously, he was a deputy to the chief inspector of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate.

Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald will appoint a replacement.
