50 dead after Pakistan bus crash

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 11 Januari 2015 | 22.40

More than 50 passengers were killed and scores injured when the bus on which they were travelling in Pakistan collided with a fuel tanker and caught fire on a highway on the outskirts of the southern city of Karachi.

Shortly after midnight the bus was en route from Karachi to Shikarpur, a town in the interior of Sindh province, when the vehicles crashed head-on.

Both immediately caught fire.

At least four passengers escaped with minor injuries after they jumped out of the bus windows.

The bodies have been taken to a morgue in Karachi.

Rescue officials said many of the bodies were badly charred and beyond recognition.

Pakistan has a bad road safety record, due in part to poorly maintained roads and vehicles, as well as reckless driving.

An average of 4,500 people have been killed in road accidents each year since 2011, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
