Northern Ireland's Attorney General has claimed that Bank of Scotland may have committed criminal fraud in how it dealt with some customers who fell into mortgage arrears.
The Attorney General, John Larkin, has written to the chief constable of the PSNI asking him to investigate the bank's behaviour.
The controversy dates back to proceedings in Belfast High Court earlier this year when Bank of Scotland was involved in three cases seeking house repossessions.
In all three situations, the bank has restructured and increased the mortgage holder's monthly instalments but was also seeking repossession of the properties involved.
The High Court judge, Master Ellison, rejected the bank's applications and accused it of 'having its cake and eating it.'
When the bank sought to challenge the High Court decision, the Attorney General took the unusual step of making a contribution to proceedings.
He claimed there was evidence of criminal fraud under the relevant legislation.
He also said the original verdict has been "unduly tender" on Bank of Scotland.
A legal representative of Bank of Scotland told the court that the appeal against the earlier rulings was being dropped.
It subsequently emerged that Mr Larkin has written to PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton, informing him of his views.
In the High Court, Stephen Shaw QC, for Bank of Scotland contended that the Attorney General's view was based on a misapprehension.
It is understood that the bank has since offered to meet the Attorney General to discuss the matter.
In the original High Court proceedings, Housing Rights Service, the organisation that supported three defendants - a sole householder and two couples - said they had suffered stress and even depression as a result of their dealings with the bank.
