The Minister for Education has asked a former head of St Patrick's teacher training college in Drumcondra to consult with second-level teacher unions and with her Department to see if conditions exist for meaningful talks to resume on the issue of Junior Cycle reform.
Dr Pauric Travers chaired previous talks between the parties which broke down over the issue of teachers assessing their own students.
Jan O'Sullivan said her door remained open for talks with teachers.
She said her position was that agreement on reform could and would be reached.
Ms O'Sullivan said another round of strikes and disruption would serve no one's interest.
Teacher unions are due to set a date on Friday for a second day of strike action, which is to take place in January.
