Women withdrew abuse claims after 'undue delay'

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 02 November 2014 | 22.40

Two Belfast women are claiming they withdrew their statements of alleged sexual abuse by a prominent Republican because they lost confidence in how Northern Ireland's authorities were pursuing their allegations.

The women were young teenagers in the late 1990s when they allege they suffered serious sexual abuse over a three-year period.

The women are retaining their right to anonymity, but have issued a statement to RTÉ News through their solicitor Ciaran Mulholland.

They claim they went to the PSNI in 2010 and made their allegations.

The women said there was undue delay in proceeding with the case against their alleged abuser because their claims got caught up in procedures linked to the allegations made by Máiría Cahill.

The women said they made known their dissatisfaction to the authorities, including the Public Prosecution Service, the Office of Attorney General and the Department of Justice two years ago.

They claim they withdrew their statements in 2013 after losing faith and trust in the justice system.

The two women want their grievance investigated as part of the review announced by the Northern Ireland's Public Prosecution Service last week.

They have asked for access to its terms of reference.
