The Garda Inspectorate has completed what is expected to be a highly critical report on how gardaí investigate crime.
Both Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald and Interim Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan have received copies of the report and are examining its contents.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice said it's a very detailed report but will be published in the near future once it has been brought to the Government.
A Garda spokesperson described it as an extensive and detailed report which is currently being examined in depth, adding that An Garda Síochána would not be commenting on it until it is published.
The Inspectorate has examined the way gardaí investigate serious and high volume crime from the time the crime is reported to the conclusion of the Garda inquiry.
Its investigation covers a three-year period from 2011 to 2014.
The report, which runs to over 500 pages, is believed to severely criticise the way gardaí investigate and record serious crime, particularly high volume crimes such as burglary, theft and robbery.
It is also understood to have identified a number of incidents where serious crime was recorded in less serious categories.
