Met Éireann has issued a storm warning, predicting strong winds and heavy rainfall for most parts of the country this evening.
It has forecast that 25-40mm of rain could fall this evening and overnight, leading to widespread excess surface water.
South to southeast winds will increase to gale force or strong gale force during the afternoon on all coasts of Ireland, extending to the Irish Sea tonight.
Winds will occasionally reach storm force ten.
The status orange and status yellow warnings come into effect at 6pm this evening and are valid until 6am tomorrow morning.
Status Orange - Wind Warning for Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Cork, Kerry and Waterford:
Southeast winds between 50 and 70km/h this evening and tonight, with gusts up to 100 to 120km/h, highest values in coastal areas.
Status Yellow - Wind Warning for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Sligo, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary:
Southeast winds between 45 and 60km/h this evening and tonight, with gusts up to 85 to 100km/h.
P&O Ferries has said there could be some disruption to its Fast Craft sailings, but that passengers would be accommodated on later Super Ferry sailings.
