Man remanded in custody after petrol bomb attack

A man has appeared in court on charges relating to a petrol bomb attack on a house in Waterford on Thursday night which left three children injured.

23-year-old Gregory Hennessy, of Priory Lawn, Waterford, was brought before a special sitting of Waterford District Court this afternoon, after being charged early this morning.

Mr Hennessy was remanded in custody and Judge Gerard Furlong recommended that he be assessed as a candidate for protective custody in prison, following an application by his solicitor Kenneth Cunningham.

Detective Sergeant Siobhan Keating told the court that Mr Hennessy made no reply to either of the charges.

Mr Cunningham applied for free legal aid, telling the court his client is "not in gainful employment" at the moment.

There was no application for bail.

Mr Cunningham also asked that Mr Hennessy be medically assessed on arrival in prison "for an underlying condition".

Judge Furlong remanded Mr Hennessy in custody, to appear again before Waterford district court on Tuesday.

The accused is charged with reckless endangerment and criminal damage.

Two girls, age 11 and one, suffered burns and cuts after a petrol bomb was thrown into their home in Ardmore Park, Ballybeg at around 9pm.

The children were in the sitting room when the attack happened.

The petrol bomb was thrown through the front window and exploded in the room.

The children were on the sofa at the time.

Their grandmother rushed into room and managed to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

The children's injuries are said to be serious but not life-threatening.

They are being treated at Waterford University Hospital.
