Labour TD says water charges here to stay

Labour TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin has said he expects there will be some measures in Tuesday's Budget focusing on those on low incomes to help them in relation to water charges.

Mr Ó Ríordáin said after meetings he and his Labour colleagues have had with Government he expects there will be some mechanism those on social welfare and in low income jobs would be able to benefit from.

However, he added that water charges were here to stay because if people wanted public services that work they had to pay for them.

Mr Ó Ríordáin said the Government had to convince people that by having a broad tax base that includes property charges and water charges there could be sustainable funding for public services like health, education and water.

Yesterday, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton said people who get their household benefits package in their social welfare payments on a quarterly basis will also receive the €25 relief payment.

Ms Burton said she also hopes Irish Water will provide an easy pay option for older people.

Thousands of people protested in Dublin yesterday afternoon over water charges with the Right2Water Campaign calling for the charges to be scrapped.
