Two investigations over Waterford stabbing

Two separate investigations are underway into a series of violent attacks on the grounds of St Otteran's Hospital in Waterford.

A man in his 40s is being questioned after three women were stabbed on the grounds of the hospital. 

Marie O'Brien a resident at St Otteran's in her 50s from Waterford City, died of her injuries.

Another female patient and a female staff member were treated in University Hospital Waterford.

Their injuries are not life threatening.

Garda technical teams are at the scene.

The HSE will be carrying out a review of what happened.

Calls are already being made by a number of local politicians to examine staffing levels

St Otteran's is the main long term, residential psychiatric hospitals in Waterford City, with normally up to 50 patients.

Yesterday evening around 7pm, an attack occurred at one of the buildings on the grounds of the hospital.

It is understood the woman who died was stabbed at least once.

Gardaí are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death.
