President Higgins speaks out over homelessness

Written By Unknown on Senin, 15 September 2014 | 22.40

President Michael D Higgins has questioned how the European Union can hold itself up as a model to the world when so many homeless people are living on the streets of its cities.

He was reacting to a report that Dublin City Council is considering building prefabs for homeless families.

Mr Higgins said his understanding as a TD was that NAMA's refurbished residential properties should be prioritised for public rental housing.

He made the comments at the opening of an extension to Ireland's largest network of residential addiction treatment centres.

Teach Mhuire in Dublin's Gardiner Street has more than doubled its residential capacity to 57.

Its main objective is to provide an alternative to homelessness for people exiting residential centres.
