Figures show rise in homicides and kidnappings

New figures show homicide offences, kidnapping and theft offences increased in the 12-month period ending in June 2014.

CSO crime figures show the rise in homicide offences was driven by a 33.3% increase in murder from 45 to 60 recorded offences.

Over the same period, kidnapping and related offences rose by 30.7% to 132 recorded offences.

Robbery, extortion and hijacking offences rose by 1.9%.

Rises were also seen in theft and related offences, fraud, deception and related offences, and controlled drug offences.

Meanwhile, gardaí have advised householders to take steps to protect their property, as burglaries typically increase by 25% during winter.

While the rate of burglaries has reduced over the last year, gardaí are advising people to remain vigilant and security conscious.

Figures show that the peak time for residential burglaries is between 5pm and 11pm in the winter months.

The analysis also shows that nearly 50% of burglaries in winter take place through the rear of home, while 20% of households are entered by burglars through an unsecured door or window.

Commenting on the increase in homicide offences, Interim Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan said: "Any increase in the Homicide Offences category is of course a matter of concern for An Garda Síochána.

"An Garda Síochána pursues all murder investigations vigorously.

"We have a strong record of successful detection of murders and several arrests have already been made in relation to the murders committed in Q2."
