More than 2,700 climate events in 158 countries are planned to take place around the world today, including rallies in New Delhi, Jakarta, London, Melbourne and Rio de Janeiro.

Already, rallies have taken place in New Dehli and Sydney, where G20 talks are taking place.

A People's Climate Picnic, organised by a range of charity and environmental organisations, took place in St Stephen's Green in Dublin this afternoon from to mark the worldwide day of action.

Ciara Corrane, coordinator of the event, said, "It's a fun family day where we're going to have music, circus performers, games and art. We're bringing people together as part of a weekend of actions that are happening across the world."

Celebrities, activists and political leaders are expected to join more than 100,000 people in New York later today for what could be the largest climate change protest in history, organisers said.

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, former US vice president turned climate change advocate Al Gore, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon  are due to take part in the "People's Climate March."

The UN's special envoy on climate change, former president Mary Robinson, says Mr Ban's attendance is to put pressure on world leaders for more action.

The rallies are taking place ahead of a climate change summit hosted by Mr Ban on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mr Ban is urging governments to support an ambitious global agreement to dramatically reduce global warming pollution.

More than 120 heads of state and almost 40 ministers are due to attend the summit that Mr Ban hopes will energize negotiations on reaching a deal on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The meeting will set the stage for a crucial conference in Paris in December 2015 aimed at finalizing an agreement.

"We are breaking ground here on many different levels," UN climate chief Christiana Figueres told reporters.

"First, we're going to see unprecedented public mobilization for climate action."
