Ukrainian artillery destroyed a "significant" part of a Russian armoured column that crossed into Ukraine during the night, President Petro Poroshenko told British Prime Minister David Cameron, according to the presidential website.

Separately, a Ukrainian military spokesman said Ukrainian forces had tracked the Russian armoured column as soon as it crossed onto Ukrainian soil.

"Appropriate actions were undertaken and a part of it no longer exists," military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told journalists.

Britain has summoned the Russian ambassador over the incursion reports.

Alexander Yakovenko has been summoned "to clarify reports of Russian military incursion into Ukraine and continued build up of equipment on border," the Foreign Office said in a tweet.

Russia accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt its humanitarian aid mission to eastern Ukraine and called for a ceasefire in the area to allow for the deliveries.

NATO has said that Russia, while calling for de-escalation of the Ukraine conflict, had in fact been escalating it.

A Reuters reporter saw a dozen armoured personnel carriers (APCs) on the move not far from a Russian convoy carrying humanitarian aid for Ukraine last night.

Dozens of heavy Russian military vehicles have also massed near the border with Ukraine.

The Guardian reported this morning its reporter saw several APCs crossing the border with Ukraine.

Ukrainian border guards and customs officials are inspecting the Russian humanitarian aid cargo contained in 280 trucks at a border point inside Russia.

Russia said it is carrying 2,000 tonnes of water, baby food and other aid for people in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists are fighting government forces.

In a statement, Russia's Foreign Ministry said: "We draw attention to the sharp intensification of military action by Ukrainian forces with the apparent aim to stop the path, agreed on with Kiev, of a humanitarian convoy across the Russia-Ukraine border."

Ukraine and some Western officials have said they believe the convoy could be a cover for a Russian military incursion, a claim Russia has described as "absurd".

The International Committee of the Red Cross has urged Russia and Ukraine to quickly agree on getting supplies from the aid cargo to civilians in conflict areas.

ICRC official Laurent Corbaz, speaking from Kiev, said the ICRC would itself deliver the aid to people and health centres in the region.

Yesterday, the convoy stopped in open fields near the Russian town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, about 20km from the border with Ukraine.

Ukraine and NATO have said they fear Russia will invade east Ukraine after massing more than 40,000 troops near the border.

Russia said it is conducting military exercises and has no plans to invade.

It also denied supporting rebels in eastern Ukraine with arms and funds.

The United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Russia over its role in eastern Ukraine and the earlier annexation of Ukraine's region of Crimea, in what has become the worst crisis in relations between Russia and the West since the Cold War.

The Ukrainian government has said if the humanitarian convoy enters Ukraine without the consent of the authorities, it would be viewed as an illegal Russian incursion, further heightening tension.

Russia's foreign ministry said it was in intensive negotiations with the Ukrainian government and the Red Cross.

Relief agencies said people living in Luhansk and in Donetsk face shortages of water, food and electricity after four months of conflict, in which the United Nations says more than 2,000 people have been killed.

Ukraine blames Russia and the separatists for the plight of the civilians, but their situation has grown more acute as the Ukrainian military has pressed its offensive, including in areas where civilians live.

Artillery shells hit close to the centre of Ukraine's separatist-held city of Donetsk for the first time yesterday.
