Post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out on the bodies of two women who died after getting into difficulties while swimming at Inch Strand in Co Kerry yesterday evening.

They have been named as Sr Imelda Carew and Sr Paula Buckley who were members of the South East Province of the Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In a statement, the order said the nuns were on holiday in Kerry and got into difficulties while swimming at Inch Strand.

Congregational leader of the Presentation Sisters Union Sr Mary Deane said the women were a source of inspiration and blessing to many people.

"We are all stunned and shocked by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, communities and friends of our beloved Sisters at this time," she said.

It is understood a third woman who was with the nuns raised the alarm.

The women were taken from the water by lifeguards who were on duty on the beach.

They were then airlifted to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee, where they were both later pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for Kerry County Council, which employs lifeguards at the beach, said the accident occurred in a shallow section of the water.

Weather conditions were described as calm at the time.
