Sunday 17 August 2014 12.33 Russian and Ukrainian border guards have agreed to proceed with the inspection of a first group of trucks from Russia's humanitarian convoy for Ukraine, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has said.
The convoy is due to travel from Russia into Ukraine under the aegis of the Red Cross.
ICRC also said it was still waiting to receive security guarantees from the fighting parties in eastern Ukraine before it goes ahead with the convoy.
Days of wrangling between Kiev and Moscow over the convoy have left the roughly 300 trucks parked up near the border since Thursday.
Russia says the trucks are carrying humanitarian aid for residents of war-torn east Ukraine.
Kiev and its Western allies fear that the convoy could be a "Trojan horse" ploy by Moscow to bolster the flagging pro-Kremlin insurgency.
Ukraine has said it sent about 60 border officials to the Russian side to scour the cargo.
Meanwhile, Ukraine today accused Russia of sending more equipment, including rocket launchers, across the border into the restive east of the country.
Ukrainian government forces are said to have taken a police station in Luhansk, a city on the border with Russia.
The Ukrainian flag has now been raised in the city, which has been under the control of pro-Russian separatists since April, a military spokesman said.
Elsewhere, pro-Russian separatists have shot down a Ukrainian fighter jet over eastern Ukraine, a military spokesman has said.
"In the course of an assignment to eliminate a large group of terrorists, a MiG-29 was shot down this morning in Lugansk region," military spokesman Leonid Matyukhin said.
He added that the pilot parachuted out and was rescued by Ukrainian forces.
