There was a peaceful conclusion to a controversial parade in North Belfast last night while Unionists pledged to step up their political campaign against the Parades Commission.

The Orange Order have also pledged to step up their political campaign against the Parades Commission.

There were no violent incidents as a 12 July Orange Order parade was prevented from passing by nationalist homes in North Belfast.

Last week a new grouping of unionist politicians and the Orange Order was formed.

It said it would try to ensure that yesterday's 12 July parades would pass off peacefully.

It promised to organise a political campaign against a Parades Commission ruling that prevented Order Order members from returning home past nationalist homes in North Belfast.

Rioting broke out when the PSNI implemented that ruling last year.

There was no repeat of the violence last night.

With their first promise honoured, the new grouping will now move to their second commitment.
