An investigation is under way into a fish kill in the Tolka River in Dublin.

The full extent of the kill is not yet known, but it is understood that it extends from an area near the Finglas Road Bridge for a considerable distance downstream.

Inland Fisheries Ireland and Dublin City Council are investigating the possible source of any contaminated material that may have caused a major pollution event in the river.

Green Party councillor Ciarán Cuffe said he had reported the incident to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mr Cuffe, who represents Dublin's North Inner City, said it would be shameful if the incident destroys the work undertaken to clean up the river, particularly since the return of spawning salmon after 100 years earlier this year.
