An Israeli official has said that Israeli senior representatives have accepted an Egyptian proposal for a comprehensive Gaza ceasefire starting tomorrow.

However, Israel's leaders still had to approve the deal.

The official, who earlier said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision-making security cabinet had agreed to the truce, later said the forum had not yet voted and was still examining its details.

In Gaza, there was no immediate comment from Hamas or other Palestinian groups on whether they had accepted a permanent ceasefire to end cross-border fighting now in its tenth day.

Meanwhile, a rocket fired from Gaza hit the Israeli city of Ashkelon, the army said, just as a five-hour lull in fighting ended.

The rocket hit at exactly 3pm (1pm Irish time), the army said in a statement, after the two sides had agreed to cease hostilities on humanitarian grounds for five hours.

This morning, three mortar shells fired from Gaza hit southern Israel just over two hours after the five-hour humanitarian ceasefire took effect, the Israeli army said.

The shells struck in the region of Eshkol, which borders the southern Gaza Strip, the army said.

The mortars landed in open areas, causing no injuries or damage, it said, and there were no reports of Israeli retaliation.

There was no claim of responsibility in Gaza for the mortar fire.

The five-hour ceasefire was requested by the United Nations to allow Gaza residents to gather supplies and repair infrastructure damaged in warfare.

More than 220 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have been killed.

Israeli tank fire hit a house in southern Gaza killing three people, minutes before the truce went into effect at 8am Irish time.

Emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said four other people were seriously wounded in the attack on the house in Rafah.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA is conducting an investigation after 20 rockets were found hidden in one of its vacant schools in Gaza.

UNRWA condemned the incident as a "flagrant violation" of international law, adding that the rockets had been removed.

Israel charges three over Palestinian teen's death

Four boys, aged between nine and 11, were killed yesterday in an Israeli raid on a beach in Gaza City.

The Israeli army said the killings appeared to be the "tragic outcome" of a strike targeting Hamas militants.

In Israel, one civilian has been killed in the past ten days by one of more than 1,300 Palestinian rockets fired.

More than half a dozen Israelis have been wounded in frequent strikes that have made a race to shelters a routine for hundreds of thousands of people.

The truce also came hours after the Israeli military said it fought Palestinian gunmen who infiltrated from Gaza.

About a dozen Palestinian fighters tunnelled under the border, emerging near an Israeli community, the Israeli military said.

At least one was killed after Israeli aircraft bombed the group, the military added.

Israel's military said it would respond "firmly and decisively" if militants in Gaza launched attacks during the five-hour break.

Clinton warns Israel about isolating itself

Former US president Bill Clinton has warned Israel about "isolating itself from world opinion" due to repeated conflicts in Gaza.

"Over the long run it is not good for Israel to keep isolating itself from world opinion because of the absence of a viable peace process," Mr Clinton told the Indian NDTV news channel yesterday.

"In the short to medium term, Hamas can inflict terrible public relations damage on Israel by forcing it to kill Palestinian civilians to counter Hamas," he added.

Hamas had a "strategy designed to force Israel to kill their own (Palestinian) civilians so the rest of the world will condemn them," while Israel could not "look like fools" by not responding to the heavy missile attacks.

Mr Clinton, who pushed hard while president for a comprehensive peace deal at a Camp David summit in 2000, urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resume serious talks.

"I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu could and should make a comprehensive peace agreement with the Palestinians," he said.

US President Barack Obama yesterday said the United States supported Egyptian efforts to bring about a ceasefire.

US officials would use their diplomatic resources over the next 24 hours to pursue closing a deal, he added.

Egypt had proposed a permanent ceasefire plan on Tuesday, which Israel accepted and Hamas rejected, saying its terms had been ignored.

Israeli media reports said Egypt was continuing its truce efforts and that senior Israeli officials would hold talks in Cairo today on a ceasefire.

The latest conflict has been largely triggered by the killing of three Israeli teens in the West Bank and the death of a Palestinian youth in a suspected revenge murder.

Most of the Palestinian projectiles have crashed on open ground or been intercepted by Iron Dome.

Gaza's Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights said 259 houses have been demolished by Israeli air strikes and 1,034 damaged, along with 34 mosques and four hospitals.

UEFA suspends European club fixtures in Israel

UEFA, European footballs governing body, has announced that no matches in the Champions League or Europa League, Europe's two international club competitions, can be played in Israel.

In a statement UEFA said it had "decided, due to the current security situation in Israel, no UEFA competition matches may be played in the country until further notice."

"Consequently, the Israeli clubs involved in forthcoming fixtures have been requested to propose alternative venues outside of Israel's territory for their home legs in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League."
