Gardaí are treating the discovery of a man's body in a disused quarry a short distance from the village of Liscannor in north Co Clare this morning as suspicious.
The body is expected to be removed from the remote location this afternoon and taken to University Hospital in Limerick where the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, will conduct a post-mortem examination later.
The body has not been formally identified.
Garda crime scene investigators have spent a number of hours conducting a detailed examination of the area where the remains were found.
The discovery came as detectives continued an investigation into the disappearance of a 41-year-old Galway man last week.
Adrian Folan was last seen in Athlone on the night of Thursday 3 July.
A student at the town's Institute of Technology, he had been working on an end of year project with some classmates.
Gardaí were alerted when he failed to show up at the college on Friday morning.
This morning a man in his 40s was arrested as part of the inquiry and is being detained at Mill Street Garda Station in Galway city.
