Thursday 12 June 2014 16.19 Seven potential victims of human trafficking have been identified in Ireland during an international operation in recent days.
15 countries took part in the second pan European operation, co-ordinated by Europol, to target Nigerian criminal networks operating across Europe.
Two Organised Crime Group's (OCG's) were targeted by gardaí during the operation, which began on Wednesday and continued until the early hours of yesterday morning.
Two people were arrested during a search of a premises in West Dublin in connection with the suspected human trafficking of seven Nigerian people into Ireland.
During the operation liaison officers from Ireland were based at Europol headquarters in The Hague coordinating the Irish response.
One of the Organised Crime Gangs targeted in Ireland was found to have links in four other member states.
Detective Chief Superintendent John O'Driscoll, of the Garda National Immigration Bureau said " according to provisional figures, seven potential victims of human trafficking from West African countries, mainly women, exploited by the two OCGs targeted, have been identified in Ireland.
"A further 31 persons have been checked in Ireland as a response to requests from fellow member states across Europe.
"As a result of the day of action, new investigations have been launched in several participating countries which are supported by Europol," Mr O'Driscoll added.
The results submitted by all the countries involved are being analysed by Europol to help identify key figures in international human trafficking networks in Europe and to establish crime patterns as well as possible criminal organisational structures.
In a statement this afternoon, Europol said "after being recruited in their home countries, the victims are trafficked to Europe and sent to work in brothels or in the street with forged identity documents".
