Garda whistleblower Sergeant Maurice McCabe has made a formal bullying complaint against members of the force, RTÉ's This Week has learned.
Sgt McCabe made the complaint to his local Garda Superintendent Pat McMenamin in recent weeks.
The complaint has led to the initiation of a formal investigation on the instruction of the superintendent.
It is understood that Sgt McCabe has alleged that two named gardaí had attempted to discredit him and undermine him professionally over a period of time, when discussing his role as a whistleblower with other members of the force.
It is also understood that Sgt McCabe felt that the alleged harassment was of such severity that he took a number of days leave and worked from home after he raised one of the alleged incidents with his superiors.
It is understood that the complaint also relates to the alleged defacing of an official garda document, which was posted in full view on a wall in Sgt McCabe's local station in Mullingar, where he is based.
That incident was first reported in the Irish Examiner newspaper last month.
It involved an incident in which an unknown person allegedly defaced the document with the words "whistleblower".
That investigation is expected to be carried out by a senior officer.
When contacted for comment by RTÉ News in relation to Sgt McCabe's complaint, the Garda Press Office said it does not discuss any internal human resource matters.
