A 25-year-old man accused of the murder of a 30-year-old nanny in Portlaoise two years ago has told the Central Criminal Court he saw red and lost control after she threatened to ruin his life.

Robert Corbet of Sheffield Cross in Co Laois said he would not have continued seeing Aoife Phelan if she had not told him she was pregnant.

Mr Corbet admits killing Ms Phelan between 25 October and 7 November 2012 but denies murdering her.

The court has been told she was not pregnant at the time of her death.

The court heard Mr Corbet ran his own haulage business after the death of his father in 2010.

He said he first met Ms Phelan in a night club in Portlaoise in June 2012.

He said they had physical contact just twice after that but there was frequent communication between them via text.

Mr Corbet said in one of these texts she told him her period was late.

He said they discussed how they would deal with the possible pregnancy.

He said he was frightened but he said they also discussed baby names.

Mr Corbet said at times she told him she could manage on her own and he found this hurtful as he was starting to get excited about the baby.

But he also said he was reluctant to meet Ms Phelan as he was afraid of "the whole pregnancy thing".

He said they were in everyday contact via texts and mobile communication service application WhatsApp, mostly about the baby.

He claimed that on 25 October 2012, he met up with Ms Phelan as he wanted clarification about the pregnancy.

The court heard there were frequent messages between them with sexual content on WhatsApp.

He told the court that he wanted clarification and "if anything else happened, it happened".

He said she became angry after he asked her what the story was with the pregnancy.

He said she made threats that she would ruin his life and ruin his business.

He said he was afraid and saw red. He said the protective instinct went off in him as he saw someone threatening everything he was and had worked for and he just snapped.

He said he ended up catching Ms Phelan around the neck with his right forearm.

He said they fell to the ground and he kept his grip. He said it was very surreal and felt like an out of body experience.

He said it was a loss of self control and he just could not stop.

The court has heard Ms Phelan's body was found buried in a barrel on his land.

State Pathologist Marie Cassidy gave evidence that Ms Phelan died of asphyxia and there was blunt force trauma to her head and trunk.

Dr Cassidy also told the court that Ms Phelan was not pregnant at the time of her death and agreed she never had been.
