A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a woman in her 20s in a shop in Kilkenny city centre yesterday evening.
The woman was at work in the Holland and Barrett shop at the Market Cross Shopping Centre shortly after 8.30pm when a man came into the shop and stabbed her a number of times.
The victim has been named locally as Mairead Moran, who was originally from the village of Kilmoganny
It is believed she knew her attacker.
Gardaí and the emergency services were called to the scene and Ms Moran was brought to St Luke's Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out today.
Gardaí have now begun examining CCTV footage from the shopping centre.
The footage reportedly shows the suspect being asked to leave the premises by a member of staff before the attack happened.
Shortly after the incident, a taxi that it is believed the suspect took from the city centre out to Loughboy was located.
The man was arrested and is being held at Kilkenny Garda Station.
The taxi was taken away for forensic examination.
