A post-mortem examination is due to take place on the body of a young man who died following an incident in Co Waterford last night.
The incident began when a group of four young men, all believed to be from the area, were on the Clonea Road area of Abbeyside outside Dungarvan after midnight.
Glass from a number of bottles were found on the road this morning.
The group were at or near the house of a senior garda, who is stationed in Dungarvan, when some more bottles were broken or thrown.
The off-duty officer came out of the house and there was a confrontation with the men.
The garda was hit on the head with a bottle, but was not seriously injured.
The group fled on foot in different directions.
One of them, an 18-year-old, was apparently trying to get over railings at the back of a housing estate when he fell.
His cause of death is unknown but he may have fallen on something before ending up in a small stream near the railings.
A follow-up search lasted a number of hours.
His body was recovered after the extensive search, which included the Coast Guard helicopter.
Three men were arrested and they are being held at Dungarvan Garda Station.
As the incident involved a serving garda at the early stage, the Garda Ombudsman Commission is now leading the investigation.
