The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has denied that he met the former minister for justice Alan Shatter on the Sunday before the former garda commissioner Martin Callinan stepped down.

It comes after Sinn Féin TD Mary Lou McDonald accused the Taoiseach of not disclosing a crucial meeting in the run-up to the controversial resignation of Mr Callinan.

However, speaking in Wicklow this morning, Mr Kenny said he had 'certainly not' met Mr Shatter and apologised for the error.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Taoiseach described the reference to the meeting as a "clerical error".

He said it referred to a meeting on the following day that was already on the public record and insisted the meeting cited by Ms McDonald never took place.

During Leaders' Questions, Ms McDonald said she had obtained details of the Taoiseach's diary on the Sunday before Mr Callinan stepped down.

She said the diary, which she obtained through a Freedom of Information Request, showed that Mr Kenny had an early morning meeting with then minister for justice Alan Shatter and his officials which he had not referred to in his Dáil account.

She claimed it had been 'edited out of his script'.
