Tuesday 06 May 2014 14.41 The Health Service Executive has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a new born baby in Cavan General Hospital.
It is understood that a consultant has since been placed on administrative leave.
The incident occurred in the hospital late last month.
In a statement, the HSE said that a "full and thorough investigation into this tragic event is now under way."
Hospital management has met the family and the HSE said it will continue to keep them informed as the investigation continues.
The executive also offered its deepest sympathies to the family.
It is understood that a consultant has since been placed on administrative leave by HSE management as the investigation continues.
However, no adverse findings have been made against the doctor involved.
The family involved has requested privacy.
