Gardaí have said at least eight shots were fired at a 39-year-old man who was shot dead in Dublin yesterday afternoon.

Christopher Zambra, who was from Galtymore Road in Drimnagh, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body during a visit to his sister's house on Cooley Road.

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster is to carry out a post mortem later today.

Gardaí believe Mr Zambra's killers knew his movements and were waiting for him, and that the motive for the murder lies in his links to organised crime.

Mr Zambra was acquitted last year of the murder of drug dealer John Carroll, who was shot dead in a pub in Dublin five years ago.

The attackers left the scene yesterday in two cars.

A Nissan Qashqai was found burnt out on Benmadigan Road, a short distance from the shooting. A firearm was also found in the vehicle.

Gardaí have appealed to witnesses to the shooting to contact them.
