Prosecution completes evidence in Anglo trial

The prosecution in the Anglo Irish Bank trial has completed its evidence.

It is day 38 of the trial of the bank's former chairman, Seán FitzPatrick, and two former directors of the bank; Patrick Whelan and William McAteer.

The three men deny giving unlawful funding to 16 people to buy shares in the bank, in breach of the 1963 Companies Act.

Mr Whelan denies seven charges of being involved in the fraudulent alteration of loan facility letters.

Prosecuting counsel Diana Stuart read a brief statement into evidence on behalf of one of businessman Seán Quinn's children, Aoife, before Senior Counsel Úna Ní Raifeartaigh told the jury that the prosecution case was completed.

The jury was told the judge would now have to deal with some legal applications and they would probably not be required until Tuesday morning.

In her statement, Aoife Quinn said she was aware Anglo made a loan to her in July 2008 of approximately €10m.

However, she said she had no dealings with Anglo officials or representatives of investment bank Morgan Stanley and did not deal with a solicitor or with the Financial Regulator about it.

She said she signed documents put in front of her by Quinn Group employees.

Mr FitzPatrick, 65, of Greystones, Co Wicklow, Mr McAteer, 63, of Rathgar, Dublin and Mr Whelan, 51, of Malahide in Dublin have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
