A murder investigation is under way following the fatal shooting of a 48-year-old man in Ballymun this morning.

John O'Regan, a window cleaner, was on his way to work on his bicycle when he was shot.

Gardaí said he was approached by a man on a bicycle and shot a number of times in the upper body.

They believe a handgun was used in the attack, but no weapon has been found.

Mr O'Regan, who lived in the area with his wife and child, was taken to the Mater Hospital, but died a short time later.

Gardaí are eager to speak to anyone who saw a man leaving Gateway Avenue on a bike.

They said he was wearing a high visibility jacket and baseball cap, and was cycling on the path.

The motive for the attack is still unclear.

Witnesses or people with information are asked to contact Ballymun Garda Station on 01-6664400, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800666111 or any garda station.
