Friday 18 April 2014 16.01 A four-year-old boy has died following a two-vehicle crash at Ballymorris, Portarlington, Co Laois last night.
The boy's mother was seriously injured and is being treated at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore.
Another child, a seven-year-old boy who was in the car at the time, received minor injuries.
The boys were taken to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise and the four-year-old was pronounced dead late last night.
The driver and the sole occupant of the second car was arrested at the scene and has since been released without charge.
The stretch of road is closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Portarlington Garda Station on 057-8623112, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
