Sunday 23 March 2014 11.08 NATO's top military commander has said Russia had a large force on Ukraine's eastern border and said he was worried it could pose a threat to Moldova's separatist Transdniestria region.
"The (Russian) force that is at the Ukrainian border now to the east is very, very sizeable and very, very ready," NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, told an event held by the German Marshall Fund think tank.
He said NATO was very concerned about the threat to Transdniestria. "There is absolutely sufficient (Russian) force postured on the eastern border of Ukraine to run to Transdniestria if the decision was made to do that and that is very worrisome."
"Russia is acting much more like an adversary than a partner," he said.
However, Russia said is complying with international agreements limiting the number of troops near its border with Ukraine.
"The Russian Defence Ministry is in compliance with all international agreements limiting the number of troops in the border areas with Ukraine," Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov was quoted as saying by the state Itar-Tass news agency.
Meanwhile, Russia said its flag is now flying over 189 Ukrainian military installations in the Crimea, the defence ministry said on Sunday.
It comes two days after President Vladimir Putin signed laws completing Russia's annexation of the Black Sea peninsula.
"The flag of the Russian Federation has been raised at 189 military units and institutions of the Ukrainian armed forces stationed on the territory of the Republic of Crimea."
