Wednesday 19 March 2014 14.35 The Police Ombudsman in Northern Ireland has begun an investigation after video footage emerged that appears to show police officers leaving an incapacitated woman by the side of a road in Derry.
The footage shows the woman being lifted from the middle of the road at John Street in Derry city centre by two police officers who then moved her to a bus lane and drove away.
The footage was recorded on St Patrick's Day.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said the behaviour of the police officers was "well below the standards we expect from our officers dealing with vulnerable people whether the vulnerability is due to alcohol or anything else."
Sinn Féin councillor Elisha McCallion described the video as disturbing and said the PSNI had failed miserably to protect a woman who was "clearly incapable of caring for herself".
She said the party met Chief Superintendent Stephen Cargin today and welcomed the fact that the incident had been referred to the police ombudsman.
Ms McCallion said: "I am glad on this occasion that the woman didn't suffer any serious injuries but this was due more to luck rather than intervention by the PSNI".
SDLP Derry City councillor John Boyle said he met with senior PSNI officers this afternoon.
Mr Boyle said the woman on the video had been identified and the officers involved had been spoken to by police.
He called for swift action to be taken regarding the incident.
"This situation cannot be allowed to drag on, or be swept under the carpet with a protracted investigation by the Ombudsman. We expect immediate action".
