Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin's allegations that the Government is involved in political corruption when redrawing electoral boundaries is cynical.

Mr Hogan said he is appalled by such comments and noted that Mr Martin did not comment or object initially to the recommendations by the local government boundary committee.

He also said the desperation of politics of Mr Martin sounds like a man expecting to do badly in the local elections.

He said: "Well I'm appalled that Deputy Martin would make such an assertion because he had nothing to say about it when the report was published ten months ago or into the led up to the local government boundary committee actually making those recommendations.

"All governments have to make terms of references available to whatever local government or national government boundaries are drawn up.

"He is now making allegations that we're involved in some sort of political corruption. It's cynical to do so just weeks before elections."
