A 27-year-old fisherman who was in a boat that capsized on Lough Ree near Athlone yesterday has died in hospital.

Another man is understood to be in a critical condition in hospital and a third man is missing. A search for him resumed this morning.

The three men were part of a group of six from an angling club in Co Armagh, who got into difficulty when their boat capsized in windy conditions.

The man who died has been named locally as David Warnock from Portadown.

The RNLI lifeboat crew, the Athlone and Lanesborough Sub Aqua Club and local anglers are taking part in the search, along with the Garda Water Unit.

Lough Ree RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Damien Delaney, who is taking part in today's operation, said the search would concentrate on a specific area.

He said: "There was quite a long debris trail stretching for about two miles across the eastern side of the lake.

"We'll be searching from where we started yesterday again in case the third man is in that area, but we'll extend the search obviously eastwards following the debris trail."

Mr Delaney said conditions had deteriorated after the men had set out yesterday.

He said: "It would appear that they left the Hodson Bay sometime around twenty past, half two.

"At that time, conditions wouldn't have been bad and some squalls came in probably around three o'clock, perhaps those squalls hit them and capsized or swamped the boat."
