Weather warning issued over high winds

Met Éireann has raised the status of a wind warning this afternoon.

The storm is expected to bring with it the strong likelihood of flooding.

The new alert is status orange, the second strongest category of weather warning that Met Éireann can issue.

The warning covers counties Clare, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Leitrim, Limerick, Mayo, Waterford and Wexford.

Gusts of up to 90 km/ph are forecast for this afternoon.

Winds will strengthen again tonight with gale force south to southwest winds developing, giving gusts of up to 120 km/ph, highest in the exposed coastal areas.

The danger of coastal flood continues, because of the combination of the gale force winds, high tides and very high seas.

Heavy thundery downpours may lead to local spot flooding inland also.

Met Éireann says further severe winds are expected later tonight and tomorrow.

Northern Ireland is also preparing for the expected storm.

Belfast City Council is making available sandbags for collection in the east of the city again today.

Around 3,000 sandbags were given out yesterday.

The measure was prompted by concern about the impact of high tides combined with strong winds and heavy rain tomorrow.

Nearly 100 flood warnings are in place in England and Wales, while 10 have been issued in Scotland.
