Several people hurt in Kiev clashes

Several people have been injured in clashes between protesters and riot police in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.

Former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, a leading opposition figure, was reported by local media to have been amongst those injured during clashes.

Mr Lutsenko was released from prison in April 2013 after receiving a pardon by the Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovich.

Fighting erupted last night after a Ukrainian court handed out a six-year jail sentence to three men accused of attempting to detonate a statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin in 2011.

Supporters of Igor Musiychuk, Volodymyr Spara and Sergiy Bevz, had gathered outside the court earlier in the day to protest the ruling against them, claiming the trial and verdict had been a sham.

Tensions are high in the capital amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations protesting a decision by the government of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to spurn the EU and embrace a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin for a bailout of his country.

The crowds of demonstrators grew after initial scuffles broke out with pro-European protesters joining the rally.

Demonstrators pushed riot police back and blocked them from accessing their vans and private cars after several hours of a continued stand-off.

Riot police were eventually forced to concede to the demands of the growing crowds to remove their helmets and show their faces to the media and protesters, before they were allowed to retreat to a local police station by foot.
