A 47-year-old father of six found dead in a drain on a bog in Co Offaly yesterday morning was shot dead.
The post mortem carried out on Christy Daly by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy last night revealed that he was shot several times in the body.
The body of Mr Daly was discovered by gardaí in the townland of Kilbride, which is about 4km from Clara.
The body had been put about two metres into the drain and had been there for a number of days.
A caravan in which he sometimes stayed and two cars were found burnt-out on the bog land.
Gardaí today officially upgraded their investigation to one of murder.
They renewed their appeal for anyone who may have seen anything or who has information on the killing to contact them.
They are following a number of lines of inquiry, including the possibility that the murder could be connected to an ongoing Traveller feud in the midlands or to allegations of sexual abuse made against Mr Daly for which he was not prosecuted.
