Tuesday 14 January 2014 13.52 The Health and Safety Authority is carrying out an investigation into the death of a three-year-old boy in Galway city centre yesterday afternoon.
Solomon Soremekun died after falling into the lift shaft at the Hynes Building on St Augustine Street.
The building remains closed to the public as inspectors from the HSA continue their examination of the scene.
The investigation centres on determining how the boy managed to fall into the lift shaft in the three-storey building.
He sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A post mortem will be carried out at Galway University Hospital later today.
Gardaí are treating the incident as a tragic accident.
The boy's family had been visiting the Department of Social Protection office in the building at the time.
The department is advising those with appointments in the building today that these will be rescheduled for a later date.
Mayor of Galway Pádraig Conneely has expressed his sympathies and those of the people of Galway to the Suremekun family.
He said yesterday's tragedy had had an impact on the city and that the thoughts of the community were with the three-year-old's family at this difficult time.
The pastor with the Faith Christian Fellowship church in Galway, Larry Ovie, says the African community in the city is in shock.
He said the community is grieving and has not yet come to terms with news of the Solomon's death.
Pastor Ovie said the family had only recently moved to the city and needed the support of the community.
