Tuesday 14 January 2014 13.54 French President Francois Hollande will set out a revised economic policy to the French electorate later today in a bid to boost the country's flagging economy.
However, the event is likely to be overshadowed by continuing allegations that President Hollande has been having an affair with a 41-year-old actress.
Doctors have said President Hollande's partner Valerie Trierweiler, who was hospitalised shortly after news of the alleged affair broke, will remain in hospital for a number of days.
The timing for Mr Hollande could not be worse. His aides had hoped his traditional New Year's news conference would set out a plan to reboot the French economy, and with it his own personal ratings, which have been at rock bottom.
Instead the initiative has been eclipsed by a scandal that France's normally strict privacy laws are struggling to contain.
The political establishment has largely supported President Hollande, and public opinion appears as yet unflustered.
But with reports of organised crime links to the individual who owned the apartment in which the president and actress Julie Gayet reportedly met for their liaisons, and the fact that his current partner, the de facto first lady of France, remains in hospital, there is no sign of the scandal blowing over.
President Hollande has been hinting at a significant U-turn in his economic policy, with overtures to the business community and warnings that public spending had to be cut.
In reality, France has been falling further behind even as a fragile recovery in the eurozone appears to be developing.
However, the economic message is almost certain to be drowned out as further details of the president's alleged infidelity continue to emerge.
