46 died in work-related accidents last year

A total of 46 people were killed in work-related accidents in 2013.

The figures from the Health and Safety Authority show the numbers of work-place fatalities are down slightly on 2012, when 48 people died.

Agriculture was the sector with the highest number of fatalities, recording 16 deaths.

Four children lost their lives in accidents on farms.

Commenting on the figures for deaths in agriculture-related accidents, HSA Chief Executive Martin O'Halloran said the pace of change in fostering a culture of safety on farms was too slow.

The construction sector recorded the second highest number of fatalities with 11 killed.

Of the 46 people killed in work-related accidents in 2013, there were eight non-worker fatalities.
