Around 7,000 thousand homes were left without power for a time in the south of the country, after a lightning strike damaged power lines.

ESB crews have been working since this morning to fix the problem which has affected those living in the south-west to the south-east.

A spokesperson for the company said power has now been restored to about 3,500 of the homes affected, but a further 3,500 are still without power.

Areas affected include Bandon, Co Cork and Shillelagh, Co Wicklow.

Elsewhere, ferries have been cancelled and gardaí have issues warnings to motorists in some areas due to adverse weather conditions.

Irish Ferries announced the cancellation of all Swift sailings because of adverse weather.

Passengers are advised to check the Irish Ferries website.

Tomorrow's sailing by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company to Douglas has been cancelled.

Gardaí in Cork are appealing to motorists to take extra care this morning as there are a number of fallen trees on the Cork to Macroom Road and on the Lough Road in Cork City.

AA Roadwatch has advised motorists that particular caution is needed around Carrick On Shannon in Co Letirim, Kilkenny City, Wexford Town and Naas in Co Kildare because of excess surface water and fallen debris.
