Man admits attempted murder of his mother

A 47-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of his mother at a Co Waterford nursing home in January 2012.

Gerald Vollrath was due to go on trial for murder this afternoon.

However, the jury was discharged after the prosecution withdrew the murder charge.

Instead, Mr Vollrath pleaded guilty to a substituted charge of attempting to murder 83-year-old Veronica Vollrath at Killure Bridge Nursing Home, Killure on 9 January 2012.

He was remanded on bail for sentence on 17 February next year.
