Nelson Mandela's remains are being returned to his native village with Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams and a party colleague forming part of an honour guard at an earlier African National Congress 'send-off' ceremony.
Mr Adams was invited to participate in the ceremony by the ANC.
Sinn Féin said Mr Adams' party colleague Richard McAuley also took part.
"We were honoured and privileged to be part of a Guard of Honour for Madiba today," Mr Adams said.
The world statesman and anti-apartheid icon will be buried following a state funeral which will take place at his home tomorrow.
This morning the military handed over the remains of Mr Mandela to the African National Congress.
There was song, dance and celebration among the tears at the service at the Waterkloof airbase.
South African President Jacob Zuma described Mr Mandela as a "man of action" saying: "We need more Madibas".
Accompanied by family and military, Mr Mandela's remains were flown to Umthata airport near his native village Qunu.
Family and members of his Tembu tribe are travelling in procession with the body to his home.
Two stops along the route will allow the public pay final farewells with Mr Mandela's body then reposing at home before a state funeral tomorrow.
