A €52m research and teaching project, designed to attract some of the world's leading research professors, has been launched at the University of Limerick.

The Bernal Project is designed to give Ireland the edge in research in the pharmaceutical, biomedical and energy sciences.

75 long-term research and teaching jobs will be provided and an estimated 150 construction jobs will be created in building the laboratories needed.

The project will fund the recruitment of ten of the world's leading professors, with five already appointed.

It will also fund start-up seed monies to support their teaching and research activities and the construction of a new advanced research building.

Most of the €52m will come from Atlantic Philanthropies, which has provided major funding to UL in the past.

The project has been described as a smart investment in Ireland's recovery and future.

Dr Mary Shire, UL Vice President of Research, said the project is attracting the expertise of the world's top researchers to Limerick in support of Irish recovery and growth.

She said it will have a major impact in promoting Ireland as a location for investment.

Consulting engineering firm announces new jobs

Elsewhere, Byrne Looby Partners consulting engineering company has said it will recruit 25 new staff.

The new posts, supported by Enterprise Ireland, will be in the company's offices in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast.

The jobs included positions for engineers, project managers and business development and support staff.

The company is aiming to fill the positions over the next 18 months.
