Obama to meet Republicans over fiscal impasse

US President Barack Obama will meet with Senate Republicans tomorrow to discuss how to end the government shutdown and a looming deadline to raise the nation's debt limit.

"That's a good start, but only if it means he's decided to drop his refusal to negotiate on solutions," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement.

"But if this is a meeting where he simply reiterates that he won't negotiate, this meeting will not be productive," he added.

A senior Republican aide said there is "a lot of concern from members from all sides" about a short-term debt limit increase plan.

However, a White House official said there is a willingness to look at the House Republicans' debt proposals and to have the debt limit extended for as long as possible.

The official said the president was willing to negotiate on broad budget issues, but only after Congress ends the shutdown and lifts the debt ceiling.

He said: "Congress needs to pass a clean debt limit increase and a funding bill to reopen the government."

Representative Rodney Davis, a Republican from Illinois, said he believed that despite the concerns, House Republicans will back the short-term debt limit increase plan.

House Republicans were meeting with their leaders today to discuss the plan, which is aimed at drawing Mr Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid into deficit-reduction talks.
